Safer Internet Day

There's so much data/knowledge available at our fingertips that we need a specific day to make sure we are finding/using the information responsibly.

Today, February 8, 2022, is Safer Internet Day! Nowadays you can pretty much do anything on the internet. Play games, chat with friends/strangers, buy things, watch videos, or even learn how to build a jumbo jet! There is so much data and knowledge available at our fingertips that we need to make sure we are finding and using the information responsibly.

What is Safer Internet Day?

First, let's answer the question of what is Safer Internet Day? Straight from the Safer Internet Day website, ConnectSafely.org, Safer Internet Day aims to not only create a safer internet but also a better internet, where everyone is empowered to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively. This campaign that brings people together through the internet started in Europe in 2004 but is now celebrated all over the world. The EU wanted to focus on the positive power of the internet rather than the harm it can cause when it falls into the wrong hands.

How do you celebrate Safer Internet Day?

Now that we have covered what this day is all about, let's talk about how you can celebrate it!

1. Attend Events and Webinars

The nonprofit organization ConnectSafely hosts a conference every year to talk about safety measures on the internet. They even bring famous speakers from big-time corporations like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook. ConnectSafely also provides programs and webinars on their website that are targeted to schools, parents, and the community.

2. Install Safety Applications

There is always new technology coming about that can protect you and your data on the internet. Finding that technology is the easy part, the hard part is knowing which one to choose. You can either look it up on the internet, ask a friend or colleague, or ask a trusted MSP like Summit Technology to find out the proper ways to secure your information and to find out how to safely use the internet.

3. Talk About It!

Bring up a conversation at work, with your friends, or at home! The more awareness around internet safety, the better! This day is an excuse to learn more about how to find the good and avoid the bad of the internet.

The Takeaway

Just because there is a specific day dedicated to internet safety doesn't mean that is the only day to talk and learn about it. You should constantly be researching new ways to be safe on the internet. This day is supposed to be a wake-up call for people to start paying attention to what is going on, on the world wide web.
